SCJ Philippines

Our wish is to serve God and the Filipino people. To be Prophets of Love and Servants of Reconciliation, to build and promote the values of Kingdom of Love through:

  • a spirit of openness and dialogue with the Philippine reality and the needs of the time

  • a life of solidarity with the poor and suffering, supporting all that promotes human dignity, justice and reconciliation

  • active integration with and service to the local Church, journeying together with the lay, the religious, and the clergy

  • a centering of our lives in prayer and adoration of the Eucharist

  • simplicity of lifestyle enriched by the spirit of sharing, having a common fund, with equal access

  • promotion of the growth of the Congregation in the Philippines

Our Congregation was founded by Fr. Leo John Dehon in 1878 in France. Since the beginning the Congregation showed immediate signs of vitality. Within ten years, the community had grown to 50 members. On its golden anniversary in 1928, there were 993 members. With the added members also came added ministries. The Congregation's first missionaries left for Ecuador in 1888, while in Europe, Fr. Dehon's apostolates continued to expand.

While there was much success, there were also many setbacks. Political turmoil connected with World War I, forced the Congregation to leave its birthplace in France, many seminarians were inducted into military service, or forced into hiding. Yet, even in its exile, the community continued its work in Germany, Brazil and Czechoslovakia.

Today, we are more than 2300 priests and brothers on 5 continents in 37 countries from Argentina and Brazil to India and the Philippines, from South Africa to Helsinki in Finland.

In 1994 our group in the Philippines started its vocation promotion program. At the moment, we have among us more than 30 Filipino members and candidates at different levels of formation.
